My Table: Houston's Dining Magazine
More than any other city, Houston applauds entrepreneurship. It doesn't matter what your pedigree is or where your degree is from. If you have a good idea and work hard, Houston gives you a chance at success.
Must see places include Sunday afternoon at the Houston Polo Club, the gem collection at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, browsing Hong Kong City Mall on Bellaire, The Menil Collection, Fourth of July at Miller Outdoor Theatre, cocktails on the balcony of the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts before the curtain goes up.
My perfect day includes Saturday morning yoga at the Post Oak YMCA, followed by pancakes and sausage at the Fountainview Cafe. On the way home, I stop at the Bayou City Farmers' Market for fresh greens and cut flowers, then head to The Guild Shop on Dunlavy to search for a bargain. Mexican food and margaritas for a late lunch, followed by a matinee at the River Oaks Theatre.
I'm a gardener, so I spend a lot of money at Buchanan's and Thompson + Hanson. Food and wine shopping is most fun at Spec's and Phoenicia Specialty Foods. My daughter works at Cotton Club, so that's where I buy "serious" clothes.Favorite places to eat? I eat everywhere! But I find myself returning often to Mockingbird Bistro, Mai's, The Golden Room, Shade and Hugo's. Houston is a great city for dining out without the pretense and expense that one encounters in other large cities. And there's always something new to discover here: the latest Asian-fusion bistro, a new cupcake shop, a Guatamalan hole-in-the-wall or Middle Eastern supper club with hookahs for everyone. If it's edible, Houston's got it.
