 Connor Walsh
Principal Dancer, Houston Ballet

What makes Houston special? Well, you have to say the people. Without them, the city wouldn't be what it is today. Between the diverse group of people and the communities that they create, there are few cities that can compare.

The rodeo is always a fun event if you want to get a real feel of the south, but Houston has so much else to offer. I love the museums here (the Menil Collection being my favorite). We also have an incredible theater district that has some of the nation’s best performing art companies—theater, opera, ballet and symphony. SPA (Society for the Performing Arts) and groups at the Hobby Center also bring in a lot of great programs. Houston also has lots of great sports venues and teams. Being a soccer fan myself, I love watching the Houston Dynamo.

If there is a time when I am not rehearsing or performing, I am most likely to be down the street from where I live at Cafe Brasil, having a coffee.

I always tend to tell people that you are able to get big city living without losing the sense of community.

Every day for me starts off walking my dog in my neighborhood. Then I go down the street to have some breakfast and a coffee. I would love to find more time at the Menil Collection because they have so many great buildings over there. Then I'll catch a movie at the River Oaks Theater.

My favorite places to eat?  Cafe Brasil, Blue Fish, Gravitas, Indika, Dolce Vita

The Galleria has almost everything you need, but the Montrose area has lots of boutiques and vintage clothing.

The diversity of our arts community is Houston's best kept secret. I think that it is made up of world-class artists, and I feel very privileged to be able to witness them perform their crafts.
